According to the study, successful business development fall into five distinct categories, each with unique characteristics that contribute to their ability to attract and retain clients.
Experts
Traits: Reluctant business developers who depend on their deep subject matter expertise to attract business. Strategy: Leverage reputation and specialized knowledge to draw in clients seeking top-tier expertise.
Confidants
Traits: Client-centric, protective, and highly responsive, with a strong track record of delivering excellent work. Strategy: Build and maintain strong client relationships through exceptional service and responsiveness.
Activators
Traits: Proactive network builders who actively share information and make high-value introductions. Strategy: Engage in continuous networking, regularly create opportunities for new business, and maintain a proactive approach to business development.
Debaters
Traits: Strong opinions and deep knowledge, unafraid to voice what they believe is best for the client’s business. Strategy: Use their expertise to challenge clients' assumptions and provide innovative solutions, establishing themselves as thought leaders.
Realists
Traits: Transparent about capabilities, costs, outcomes, and value. Strategy: Build trust through honesty and realistic assessments, ensuring clients have clear expectations and understand the value provided. The study found that Activators were the most successful at business development. Their success can be attributed to several key factors:
